The Linkage Community Trust in Grimsby needed some sensory cushions for their new 'bus' which they have recently bought with Lottery funding. The ladies had so much fun decorating the cushion tops with a variety of bits and pieces creating these lovely tactile cushions and learning a few techniques along way such as Suffolk Puffs, tucks and pleats and Jennie Rayment's Fancy Fandangoes! SUZANNE'S EMBROIDERY HOOP/PROJECT BAG WORKSHOP - November 2014

Suzanne gave us a workshop on how to make this bag. It has detachable pockets for your hoops or projects. Your cutting mat will fit neatly inside the placket. The pattern for this bag will be available soon.

SUZANNE'S CUSHION, PIPING and ZIPS WORKSHOP - October 2014

Scatter Cushions, Bolsters, Oxford Pillows, Box Cushions, Piping, Trims and Zips.
Ever looked at the cushions in John Lewis or Laura Ashley and wondered how they are made? At this workshop we learned the techniques used to make cushion covers with a piped trim and a zip closure. Suzanne gave lots of tips from the Soft Furnishing Trade that can’t be found in a book, that will gave our sewing a professional finish.
The morning was spent "classroom style" and covered all we needed to know about how to measure, cut, join, sew, pipe and insert zips for cushions, bolsters, box cushions and Oxford Pillows. The afternoon gave us the opportunity to put what we had covered into practice, making up samples to keep and refer back to, and making our own cushion cover.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING and QUILT SHOW - September 2014

Haven Quilters held a coffee morning and quilt show in aid of Macmillan’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ in September. Using our quilt frames we hung some of our quilts around the room. In fact we had so many some were displayed on the church pews! Ann X and Audrey once again manned the cake stall, Joy, Pam and Rita set up and looked after the sales table. We were also fortunate to have Lisa from L&C Fabrics in Grimsby come along with some of her fabrics for sale. To look at L&C Fabrics website click here
When the dust had settled we were able to give £708.31 to Macmillan Cancer Care.

SUZANNE'S MACHINE TRAVEL BAG - August 2014

Suzanne has developed a pattern for a sewing machine cover that completely encloses the sewing machine and came to show us how it is done. If you are travelling to workshops and haven’t the room in your car for a trolley bag and want to protect your machine cover from scuffs, then this machine cover is perfect. It has a zip from the base right around the cover. You place your machine inside and pull the zip right round from both sides just leaving a gap for the handle so you can carry your machine. When transporting or storing you can zip the cover up completely. The pattern is suitable for Husqvarna Design 1 and SE, Husqvarna Ruby series and Husqvarna Diamond series. Suzanne’s pattern is available for £3.50 plus P&P.

PROJECT LINUS WORKSHOP DAY - May 2014

We had yet another lovely Project Linus day where we used up loads of scraps to make ‘quilt as you go’ blocks with the stitch and flip method. We then used our new Club Simplicity Bias Binder maker to make sashing strips to put the quilts together. A lovely sample in pink! After a very busy morning stitching and flipping we had a wonderful Pie and Pea lunch provided by the New Inn at North Thoresby. Absolutely yummy!

SUE ATKINSON'S 'THAT BAG' WORKSHOP - November 2013

Sue Atkinson very kindly came to Haven Quilters to teach us how to do “That Bag”. Sue saw a similar bag whilst she was in Canada and created this unique and very useful bag which can also be used like a rucksack. “That Bag” has a zipped centre which makes it completely safe and has two very useful pockets at either side. Here are some pictures of completed bags and work in progress. Thank you Sue, we had a really lovely day. If any groups out there would like to make “That Bag” which can almost be completed in a day, then our group would thoroughly recommend Sue Atkinson.

SCRIP BAG WORKSHOP - August 2013

Several of our ladies have Jennie Rayment’s 'Tucks and Textures II' book. Today we did a workshop using the Scrip Bag pattern taken from Jennie’s book. We had loads of fun, turning the bag through and using it as a hat. Thank you Jennie for a lovely pattern. We thoroughly enjoyed our play day and ended up with lots of lovely bags.

ROSIE RABBIT WORKSHOP - September 2012

Fondly known to all as 'that bleeping rabbit'. The ladies had lots of fun making and dressing their rabbits. The eyes, nose and some of the clothes were a bit of a challenge but one of our group who wishes to remain anonymous (thank you Janice), very kindly helped everyone out.

PROJECT LINUS WORKSHOP DAY - August 2012

With a generous donation from Lincolnshire County Council’s Early Year’s Team the Group had a trip to the Fabric Guild. We bought fabric, put it into packs together with patterns and the ladies came and had a wonderful time making quilts for Project Linus. Sue Hall, PL Co-ordinator from Lincoln and her colleague Lynn Fairhead, came along and collected some of the finished quilts so they could distribute them. It was a really lovely fun day and we are hoping to hold another in 2013.
During the day we also presented a cheque for £1450 to Chrystal from Macmillan Nurses. This was raised at out exhibition in July.

LATTE QUILT WORKSHOP -

Liz Hanbury is teaching a monthly class on Kerrie Hay’s Latte Quilt. The first class in October 2010 was a taster when everyone made a sample block. The second class in December was the start of the quilt. Most of the ladies now have the first 2 blocks completed and are well on the way to completing the next 4.

By using different coloured embroidery threads, everyone’s blocks are totally unique. Visit the site and watch our progress.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING -

Haven Quilters held a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan’s ‘World’s Biggest Coffee morning’. Using our quilt frames we hung some of our quilts around the room. Ann X and Audrey manned the kitchen, Barbara and Jane sold raffle tickets and the morning made £130.10 in memory of Janet Fulton, one of our valued members who sadly died in 2011.

After the rush everyone sat down for a cuppa and a well earned rest.
